MDI debate at London Central Mosque: Salvation in Christianity and Islam

Part 1 has just come out of production, so here is the film of my debate with the pastor of the Church where I became a born-again Evangelical Christian.

Part 2 records the rebuttals and the Q & A session.

It took place at the prestigious London Central Mosque on 4th December 2011. We discussed the following questions (and a lot more!)

How are we saved? How does God save mankind from the consequences of their evils acts? Can we ever be forgiven? How do we obtain this forgiveness from God? Do we need the sacrifice of Jesus, or is striving in good actions with repentance enough? What faith do we need? Did Jesus teach atonement of our sins through his blood, or by faith and good actions alone?

Speakers:

Rev Dr Steve Latham, Director for Continuing Ministerial Development at Spurgeons College, London (a Christian Seminary)

Paul Williams, Director of Muslim Debate Initiative

In my view this was an excellent debate and showcased how MDI hosts, moderates and conducts its debates in a respectful and intellectually rigorous manner.

  1. themahdiblog says:

All this is a side show, modern day Islam isn’t islam at all, islam existed before the prophet muhammad because it’s not a religion, it’s a way of life, the quran states that abraham was muslim even in pre islamic times, because islam is not about praying 5 times a day, it’s about defeating our evil thoughts by knowing God on a personal level. It’s not about protecting the religion from the world, it’s about protecting God from yourself, muslims today are not doing that they bought the illusion of the devil, they are lost.
I know this because I found God, I’m a true muslim, my blog explains more.

  2. Salamoalaikum wr wb,

Thanks Bro. Paul for the very cogent and insightful information provided in your session – Jazakallah. May you continue to serve.

I should mention that Dr. Latham is one of those gentle Christians that my humble self has seen.

    Allah knows best.

    Sincerely,
    Q.M.

  3. Today I received this review of the event from a MDI colleague in North America:

WOW! MashAllah – hands down my favourite MDI debate thus far as far as the full package goes:
    1) br. Paul did an amazing job mashAllah – topic, content, quality, to-the-point, professional, precise, confident, sincere – all adding up to a powerful blow to the Christian claim to Salvation – alhumdullah. ENCORE! Bring br Paul back!
    2) Excellent camera work and quality – get these guys on board for future debates – they make the format look even better and easier to watch mashAllah.
    3) Both sides were respectful, controlled, and well-spoken – despite the poor rebuttals on the Christian side.
    4) Last but not least the comic relief as provided by br Abdullah was thoroughly entertaining lol.
